Family News in Focus Names Stuart Shepard New Host
Longtime broadcaster, former correspondent replaces Kim Trobee
July 12, 2010
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It will be a homecoming of sorts July 12 when longtime broadcaster Stuart Shepard, a correspondent for Family News in Focus from 1999 to 2005, gets back behind the microphone as host of the news program heard on more than 700 stations across the U.S.
Shepard, who in recent years has made a national name for himself courtesy of his "Stoplight" video commentaries (seen at www.citizenlink.com), is replacing Kim Trobee, who is leaving Family News in Focus to serve as a women’s pastor at her church.
Focus President Jim Daly called Shepard “the natural choice” to step in.
"Stuart has more than 25 years of broadcasting experience and more than a decade with our public-policy department," Daly explained. "He knows how to make compelling, informative radio, and he understands how to use the medium to educate listeners about the issues that affect their families."
In addition to his new hosting and producing responsibilities, Shepard will continue to oversee the CitizenLink website and daily e-mail, host the weekly Focus Action Update and create new episodes of "Stoplight," the short video commentary series that has gotten him praised as a patriot by the Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly and named "Worst Person in the World" by MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann.
It’s a heavy load, but one Shepard looks forward to shouldering.
"The goal of all of our media efforts – radio, video, web, e-mail – is to bring a unique Christian perspective to the issues and stories families care about," he said. "When we alert people to practical ways to get involved to help their communities thrive, that’s a successful day’s work.
"It’s been the mission of Family News in Focus since its inception, and it’s not going to change just because a new guy is sitting in the host’s chair."
Shepard’s first radio job was in college, and he has since held a variety of jobs in TV and radio, including a stint as the award-winning chief meteorologist for a Kentucky television station. He and his wife have a young son – and it’s his family, Shepard says, that motivates him to try to make America a better place for the next generation.
