'America's Pastor to Pastors' Retiring from Focus

Rev. H.B. London Jr. says 20 years with group a 'gift from God to me'

May 20, 2011

Colorado Springs, Colo. -- The Rev. H.B. London Jr., beloved for two decades as "America's Pastor to Pastors," is retiring from Focus on the Family at the end of June.

London, the ministry's vice president of church and clergy since 1991, said it's time to "let a little air back into my schedule."

"My 20 years of service at Focus on the Family and the greater church has been the most exciting and fulfilling opportunity of my nearly 50 years in ministry," London said. "Honestly, it's hard to put into words what a debt of gratitude I feel to Focus; pursuing what I have felt is my calling here has been a gift from God to me.

"But for everything there is a season," he added, "and my season has come."

London, a fourth-generation minister, built Focus on the Family's church and clergy division from the ground up, creating an outreach that today serves thousands of pastors and church leaders nationwide through written and broadcast resources and personal counseling. He's authored 11 books and is the host of the popular "Pastor to Pastor" audio series.

Focus President Jim Daly applauded London's ground-breaking work in ministering to clergy and their families, noting that more than a dozen other organizations have created pastoral-support ministries during London's time at Focus.

"One of H.B.'s favorite sayings is, 'God loves you as though you were the only one in the world to love - and that makes you a very important person,' " Daly said. "There is no way to calculate what an important person H.B. has been to the ministry of Focus on the Family and the lives of the pastors and their loved ones he's served -- or to me, personally."

London said he has no intention of completely giving up his interaction with churches even after he steps away from Focus.

"It's time to spend some more time with my family" - which includes wife Beverley, two married sons and four grandchildren," he said. "But I still hope to do a little itinerant ministry - go where I'm invited to go and help members of the clergy who may need extra attention."
