Faith Conversations: The Highest Virtues

Share:

Scripture indicates that one virtue — love — has supreme value above all other virtues. But when you don't feel particularly loving, you don't have to try to muster romantic feelings for your spouse.

Discuss these verses as a couple. Focus your conversation on the following questions.

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”
— Colossians 3:12-14

  • Which of the virtues listed in this Bible passage do I demonstrate most often?
  • Which ones do you think are most important?
  • What virtue would you like to nurture more in your life?

Many Scripture verses indicate that one virtue — love — has supreme value above all other virtues. We can and should be compassionate, kind, patient and humble, but if we don’t act in love, our spouse may have difficulty appreciating all our other good qualities.

When you don’t feel particularly loving, you don’t have to try to muster romantic or sentimental feelings for your spouse. The kind of love to strive for is not an emotion but an action, a self-sacrificing love that puts your spouse’s interests first. And the way to have an abundant supply is through cultivating a deeper relationship with Christ. He’s the infinite source of love.
