Focus on the Family India operates out of the city of Hyderabad and connects churches and families to resources and programs to help Indian families thrive. There are some distinct challenges facing Indian families, such as pressure to maintain the family’s societal standing, a suicide rate that is higher among Christians than any other group, and stark differences in how varying age groups view marriage and family. The Focus India team has developed a counseling ministry and is working on networking churches together to serve families together.
Focus on the Family’s ministry in India goes back many, many years, even though the office is just a few years old. Prior to the office, Focus had translated the No Apologies curriculum in to five different Indian languages (Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Punjabi, and Gujarati).
Focus also worked with the team in Hyderabad to create a live-action video presentation of Adventures in Odyssey. The production team worked closely with AIO producers in the USA to make sure the original story was both uniquely Adventures in Odyssey and uniquely Indian. The program airs every year during the Christmas season.
A New Audience
Although only a tiny fraction of India's population speaks English as a first language, when the population that speaks English as a second or third language is added in, there are more than 125 million English speakers in the country. Which would make it second only to the USA for English-speaking audience size.
The Church Channel
The average age for Christian minister in India is in the sixties, so young couples and families don't always know where to turn. In addition, Churches in India are focusing on evangelism and personal discipleship, but are looking for more tools to share practical family advice.
