Back-to-School Butterflies

Butterflies and knots—I have both. In my stomach, that is. I always get this feeling when I’m excited, nervous and scared all at once. The sun is shining, but I want to hide under my bed.

Today is the first day of kindergarten. I don’t feel ready. What if I’m not smart enough? I think. What if the boys and girls don’t like me? I hope I will like them.

“Dear God,” I pray, “help me get through this day without messing up.”

At breakfast, sticky French toast sticks catch in my throat. Maple syrup helps me swallow them. They feel like heavy dough balls in my gurgling stomach. My new shoes and pink lunch box give me the courage to head out the door.

I am the first one to arrive in my classroom. The posters and bright cubby baskets make me feel a little better. Apples hang on a paper tree just inside the door. Each one has a name written on it. I spot my name on the red apple in the center of the tree.

I peek into my backpack for the sixth time. Whew, I haven’t forgotten anything.

Boys and girls start to come in. They all look like I feel—scared and shy. Some look like they don’t know if they are in the right room.

The bell rings. The class fills with children. Most of them are looking at me. My face starts to feel hot. My cheeks probably look as red as the apples on the paper tree.

Why can’t they look at something else? I wonder.

Inside, I know why they are staring at me.

I am their teacher. I whisper a quick prayer, asking God for courage. I will do my best to please Him no matter how nervous I feel.

“Welcome to class, boys and girls!” I say. “My name is Miss Turner, and I’m very glad you’re here.”

I motion for the students to join me on the carpet. “If you’re feeling a little scared right now, don’t worry. I am, too. Remember that a new school year means an exciting journey for us all.”

As we all sit in a circle, I notice that the butterflies in my stomach have stopped fluttering. The knots have loosened, too. Now I’m excited about a new school year filled with new adventures and new friends.

Top 5 Tips for School Success
1. Be Prepared. If your school has an open house, go to it. This way you can see your classroom, meet your teacher and say hi to classmates before the first day.

2. Start With Prayer. Go to school with a smile. Pray for God’s help. You can do anything with Him by your side.

3. Listen Up. You need to hear what your teacher says. Try not to be distracted by looking outside or at the clock. Be a good listener, so you can do things right the first time.

4. Laugh It Off. If you make a mistake, don’t be embarrassed. Be the first to laugh. Ask for help if you need it.

5. Make a Friend. Look around and find someone else who looks scared or nervous. Go say hi. If you try to help somebody feel better, you will be surprised how much better you feel, too!

Remember: When you are friendly, you are more likely to make good friends.
