Mighty, Mini Kite

Gather

8 1/2-inch by 11-inch piece of paper
markers
ruler
pencil
stapler
masking tape
20 feet of strong thread
thick cardboard

Go

1. Decorate your paper with markers, or use a piece of colorful paper.
2. Fold the paper in half lengthwise.
3. Make a mark along the fold, 1 1/4 inches from the top.
4. Make another mark 4 inches from the top.
5. Without creasing the paper, pull the top right corner to the first mark and fasten with a staple. Do the same with the other side.
6. Put a small piece of masking tape on the 4-inch mark.
7. Ask a parent to poke a hole through the paper and tape.
8. Push one end of thread through the hole and tape it tightly to the other side. Wrap the rest of the thread around a small rectangle of thick cardboard. Now your kite is ready to fly!

To fly your kite:

1. Check the wind. Different kites need different wind. A light, steady breeze is best for this small kite.
2. Get a helper. Your helper should face the wind and hold the kite high. Unroll the string while you back up, but keep the string tight. When the helper lets go of the kite, pull on the line.
3. Send it soaring. Unroll the line to allow the kite to fly higher. Different kites work well at different heights. Test yours to see where it flies best.
