Every year, Clubhouse readers write and illustrate a full issue. Here are some of our favorite poems that didn’t appear in the magazine… written by kids like you!
August
Evelyn R., 12, Wisconsin
Bright stars in the night,
Splashing in the sun,
Birds flying to the highest height,
Tire-swinging fun.
Picnics at the sunny beach,
Pail and shovel in hand,
Biting into a big, round peach,
Making a castle with sand.
Blazing fires like a torch,
They are glowing bright,
Drinking lemonade on the porch,
What a spectacular sight.
This is August.
I Love Paris
Taryn T., 9, Indiana
I love Paris, the sights to see,
The Eiffel Tower, a bakery!
I love Paris, the way it glows,
The berets and fancy clothes!
I love Paris, shiny and bright,
What a place to spend the night.
I’ll Carry the Flame
Justin K., 16, Missouri
When the earth is scorched and weary,
When the fields go up in flame,
When the sky is dark and mourning,
I’ll love you just the same.
When your heart is slashed and bleeding,
When your mind is numb with fear,
When your soul is gashed and brooding,
I’ll wipe away your tears.
When the world is gray and silent,
When shadows shroud the glen,
When the air is cold and ashen,
I’ll restore your soul again.
When the path is rough and winding,
When you have no strength to fight,
When the ground is cracked and shaking,
You’ve never left My sight.
When the dark is thick and choking,
When your heart is stiff with shame,
I’ll send down angel armies,
And I’ll carry the flame.
Why?
Jenna D., 9, Maryland
Why are tigers purple?
Why do monkeys talk?
Why do cool, blue penguins
Like to jog, instead of walk?
Why do birds do somersaults?
Why do bunnies wear wigs?
Why do dancing turtles
Do the hokey-pokey, instead of jigs?
Why do giraffes whistle?
Why do hippos wear rings?
Wait, you just told me
They don’t really do those things?!
So now I understand it,
Now I’m really sure.
God made us special,
To do all these things and more.
