Matthew Parker’s Decoder #2016-11

Did November’s flag code leave you seeing stars? Here it is again:

How It Works

Replace the stars on the stripes with letters using the key below.

To put the letters in order, look for the missing star in each row of blue. Since the sixth star is missing from the first row, put the sixth letter (alphabetically) of the code first. Keep going down the rows until you run out of letters.

Coolness!

In 1856, Australia was the first country to use uniform voting ballots—pieces of paper that listed all candidates in order. It took 32 years before Massachusetts became the first U.S. state to adopt a similar system in 1888.

Other methods have been developed to speed up the delivery and accuracy of voting, such as punch cards, lever machines, video screens and electronic counting. But a few American poll stations still use the original method to fight against fraud. Verifying each vote by hand just can’t be beat.

Look for a new code in the next issue of Clubhouse magazine.
