How It Works
Developed in 1876, the Dewey Decimal System organizes nonfiction books by topic. It’s how libraries keep track of the thousands of titles on their shelves. Each book receives a three-digit class number based on its subject:
000—General Information (encyclopedias or catalogs)
100—Philosophy
200—Religion
300—Social Science
400—Languages
500—Science
600—Technology
700—Art and Sports
800—Literature
900—History and Geography
To crack this code, arrange the books left to right by class number. (Can’t tell where some books belong? Visit your local library.) Then read the red letter in each title.
