Easter Story Bags

Gather

small paper gift bag (8-by-5-by-10-inch)
ruler
pen or marker
scissors
1-inch thick Styrofoam sheet
plastic wrap
glue dots or tacky glue

Go

1. Measure 1 inch from the base of the bag, and 1 inch from either side. Sketch an arch on the front (non-folding) side of the bag.
2. Carefully cut out the arch.
3. Measure the base of the bag. Cut the Styrofoam sheet to fit inside the bag at an angle. This will be the base of the scene.
4. Cut plastic wrap to cover the hole. Glue the plastic “window” against the front opening from inside the bag.
5. Design backdrop and scene (see instructions below) and display them in the bag.

coarse sandpaper
scraps of colorful fabric
glue dots
construction paper: green, black, brown and sky blue
scissors
cardboard
brown crayon
tacky glue
nails or pins

Go

1. Draw a road down the middle of the Styrofoam base.
2. Paste sandpaper to the base on either side of the road.
3. Using glue dots, cover the road with scraps of fabric.
4. Draw several palm branches (see pattern) on green paper. Cut out and glue to the sides of the road.
5. Draw and cut the backdrop (see pattern):
First layer—Jesus and donkey on black paper
Second layer—cut city gate out of cardboard; outline stones with brown crayon
Third layer—hills on brown paper
Fourth layer—sky on blue paper
6. Paste the backdrop layers together. Attach backdrop to bag.
7. Stick nails under back edge of base to elevate scene on a slant. Slide scene into Story Bag and secure with glue.

Gather

half ball of floral foam or Styrofoam
pins or toothpicks
thick yarn, green or brown
12 small pieces of gravel
tacky glue
3 nails
3 short twigs
construction paper: gray, purple and dark red
dryer lint

Go

1. Attach floral foam to base with pins to form a hill.
2. Cover the base and hill with yarn.
3. Glue 12 small stones around the base of the hill.
4. Glue twigs to nails to form three crosses. Push tip of nail into floral foam hill.
5. Trace and cut the backdrop (see pattern):
Front layer—hills on gray paper
Middle layer—a city skyline on purple paper
Back layer—dark red paper, cut to fit the back of the bag
Paste the backdrop layers together.
6. Paste dryer lint “cloud” onto red sky. Attach backdrop to bag.
7. Slide scene into Story Bag and secure with glue.
