Gather

3 potatoes
3 copper pennies (look for coins from 1982 or earlier)
3 galvanized nails
4 wires, with alligator clips at both ends
1.5-volt clock or LED light

Go

1. Ask a parent for help. (You should always have a grown-up nearby when working with circuits and electricity.)
2. Stick a nail into one end of a potato (Potato 1) and a penny halfway into the other end. The two metals must NOT touch! Repeat with Potato 2 and 3.
3. Using alligator clips, connect a wire from the nail in Potato 1 to the penny in Potato 2. Run a second wire from the nail in Potato 2 to the penny in Potato 3.
4. Remove the battery from your clock. Using alligator clips, connect a wire from the penny in Potato 1 to the negative (-) end in the clock. Then connect a wire from the nail in Potato 3 to the positive (+) end in the clock.
5. If you’ve wired the circuit correctly, the clock should light up!
