How can I get started as a writer or get my writing published?

How can I get started as a writer or get my writing published?

There is no one sure-fire way to become a published writer, but here are some suggestions that have worked for others:

  • Attend a writers’ conference. Professional writers and representatives from publishing houses are often in attendance; this provides excellent learning and networking opportunities.
  • Review writer’s market guides. Books like Sally Stuart’s A Christian Writer’s Market Guide and Writer’s Market provide information about contacting editors, audience demographics, and payment rates, as well as offer summaries of the type of books and articles the company will publish. These books also include listings of writers’ conferences across the country. Both books are available at many traditional bookstores and libraries. You may also purchase A Christian Writer’s Market Guide from the author by writing to 1647 S.W. Pheasant Drive, Aloha, OR 97006-3811, calling (503) 642-9844 or ordering online at www.stuartmarket.com.
  • Acquaint yourself with many periodicals and/or publishing houses. Since each publisher has unique and specific requirements, professional writers tailor their work to meet the needs of the intended audience in any given situation.
  • Follow the submission guidelines. Many publishers will simply refuse to read an article or manuscript that does not meet their submission criteria. Consult the market guides or write to the company for a copy of their writers’ guidelines before sending in your work.
  • Hire a specialist. Several businesses will evaluate your book proposal for a fee. If they feel your idea is promising, they will share your proposal with a number of Christian publishers. Two such companies are:
  • Find an editor. Ask someone to read over your work and provide input. You may wish to consult a friend with an English or journalism degree, or ask a member of your church. If you’d rather hire a professional editor, you can use critique services like The Christian Communicator. Send your correspondence to the attention of Susan Titus Osborn at 3133 Puente St., Fullerton, CA 92835.
