Will my teenage son’s ADHD-behavior subside as he gets older?

I have a 13-year-old son who has ADHD. He has gotten very loud and obnoxious and talks all the time. Should we expect this to continue, or will it subside as he gets older?

This is a common question because ADHD, once it has started, has a reasonably good chance of continuing. Most kids with ADHD have other disorders, too, or they are at risk for other disorders. Someone who has ADHD, but doesn’t get treatment is more prone to become addicted to alcohol or drugs, get in trouble with the law or commit suicide.

Most kids benefit from the medication prescribed to them for ADHD. It helps them concentrate and perform better. It also calms them down enough to develop friendships with other children.

If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, the entire family may want to consider therapy. Either a qualified pastor or counselor can help the family understand the disorder. Get help from medication, too. It is currently the most effective therapy even though more options are now available.
