Hello from Focus on the Family! Summer is in full swing, and you probably gathered with those you love earlier this month to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day. Even though July 4th is past, I encourage you to spend some additional time this month reflecting on the rich history of America — and, specifically, the faith and courage that inspired our forebears to sail across a treacherous ocean in order to worship freely in a new land.
Despite our ability here in America to attend church, read our Bibles, publicly express our beliefs, and pray openly, I’m sure you’ve observed the cultural shift that has given way to a concerning rise in antagonism toward biblical principles.
Given the ongoing hostility toward biblical principles and the general moral decline here in the U.S. and all over the world, I’m especially excited to tell you about a new documentary Focus is preparing to release. It’s called Truth Rising, and I believe it has the potential to help shape a new discourse among believers about this momentous civilizational moment we’re encountering.
The need for a reality check about the state of society is clear. The current cultural landscape, of course, can be traced to a growing societal rejection of biblical principles. We see this in every area of life.
Far too many marriages end in divorce, millions of babies are lost to abortion, children and teens are mutilated and drugged in the name of “gender-affirming care,” popular media is tainted with explicit content, schools teach ideologies that run directly counter to Scripture’s teachings, and devoted believers are vilified and accused of hatred and bigotry simply for voicing their convictions. I could go on and on describing our modern-day cultural landscape in which goodness is derided, and sin is celebrated. There are consequences when truth is abandoned.
I’m reminded of that sobering passage found in 2 Timothy 3:1-5:
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.
If that’s not an apt description of 21st-century Western civilization, I don’t know what is!
Make no mistake: our society is in rapid decline. Does that mean that we should be without hope? Is the Body of Christ called to hide in our bunkers and disengage from the world? Of course not! We need to be faithful, and the Lord will take care of the results.
Matthew 5:13-16 describes God’s people as “the salt of the earth,” “a city set on a hill,” and “the light of the world.” In other words, the world needs the Church to be the Church.
There’s no question that we’ve reached a tipping point, and where we go from here will determine whether the culture collapses altogether or experiences a moral and spiritual renewal. In the face of this troubling reality, God’s people are being called to proclaim truth — clearly, boldly, and lovingly — to a confused and chaotic world.
This is where Truth Rising comes in. Focus has partnered with the Colson Center to develop this powerful documentary calling people to confront the darkness with the light of truth and hope. The film will premiere online — for free — on September 5.
As you listen to the various interviews and reflect on the compelling and insightful commentary offered throughout Truth Rising, you’ll be inspired to consider how the Lord might be prompting you to be an agent of change and transformation right where He’s placed you. Each one of us is uniquely positioned and gifted to impact those around us, and we all must choose whether we will embrace the task God has given us to light up the darkness by living and proclaiming truth.
This leads me to an important point: Truth Rising is not simply a film to watch passively. It’s a growing movement, a call to action at a time when the very foundations of morality, identity, and reality itself have been dismantled. Our hope is that it will inspire God’s people to live out their faith. As those who serve a good and sovereign God who is the Author of truth, we must choose faith and hope over fear. We must stand firmly on the assurance that our Heavenly Father has written the entire story of civilization from beginning to end, and God has a role for His people in each chapter of that story.
You and I have been placed in this moment “for such a time as this.” You and I are here in this moment for a reason. God has placed us here to live out our calling. That’s why I’m so excited about the potential for Truth Rising to serve as a rallying cry for this generation of change-makers.
