Jim's Heart

Gender confusion and hypersexuality have invaded our communities and our schools. Meanwhile, parental authority is under fire. As a Christian, you may wonder how best to respond and give the children you love a strong, unwavering faith as they face new challenges this school year. I’m grateful for friends like you who support efforts to place biblical resources in the hands of families who struggle against the challenges of today. You are meeting the needs of husbands and wives, young adults, parents, and children who need the light and hope of Christ every single day.

One of the most powerful spiritual tools families and believers of today have is prayer. Wouldn’t you think prayer would become an emphasis in a society that continues to identify largely as Christian?[1] The problem, of course, is that offering a casual nod to Christianity doesn’t necessarily mean walking out a personal, dynamic, life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. People of genuine, transformative faith are fewer and farther between these days.

And that means prayer has fallen by the wayside in the United States. But there is hope and it begins with you and your family. I want to invite you to join me in asking the Lord to bless America and her families as we head into the busy fall. Scripture reassures us that Almighty God, the God who created the heavens and the earth and sustains all of life, bends down to hear every faltering prayer of the humblest saints. We are invited to bring all our needs, concerns, and burdens to our compassionate Father and entrust them to His sovereign and merciful care.

We know, too, that there is great power in corporate prayer. Recall that sobering passage in Joel 2, when the people are warned in terrifying detail about the coming day of the Lord. Note, however, what God tells His people in verses 12-13:

Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
and rend your hearts and not your garments.”

Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
and he relents over disaster.

When God’s people repent and lift their voices in fervent prayer, He hears and responds! This passage offers a beautiful picture of God’s boundless mercy and forgiveness.

With that in mind, let’s be faithful to intercede on behalf of our leaders and fellow citizens. Let’s lift up the president and his administration, our various elected officials, and the members of our judiciary, asking the Lord to grant them His wisdom and discernment. Join me in asking that God grant wisdom to school officials, teachers, and others in authority over the children you love throughout the school year.

Above all, please join me in asking God to work in the hearts and minds of parents from shore to shore. Only when there is true revival among families will we see our country begin to heal and flourish from the inside out. Building a strong faith for the next generation is critical. Next month provides an incredible opportunity for parents to do just that.

Bring Your Bible to School Day will be October 2. This student-led initiative invites students across the country to carry their Bibles with them into their schools on the first Thursday of every October as a way of exercising their First Amendment rights while opening the door for respectful conversations about faith with peers and school staff.

Help us spread the word about Bring Your Bible to School Day with the families in your child’s school. And don’t forget to pray for this special event, for families, and for our nation as part of the 30-Day Prayer Challenge. Thank you for your support as a spiritual investment to see families like yours thrive in Christ.

God bless you!
