MARRIAGE DEVOTIONAL – Secrets to a Lifelong Love: Friendship

Share:
Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher/Twitter

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.
1 Peter 4:8, NLT

TODAY’S DEVOTION

He made five cents a day. They had five kids. But somehow, Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher made things work. Divorce was never an option. They never needed it because for 86 years and 290 days, the couple simply enjoyed each other’s company. In 2008, the Guiness Book of World Records recognized them as the oldest living couple.

As the world’s oldest living couple, the Fishers were often asked about the secret to their marriage. They posted their answer on X (formerly Twitter): “We grew up together and were best friends before we married. A friend is for life; our marriage has lasted a lifetime.”

Just what did that friendship look like? In their later years, the Fishers described it this way: “The children are grown, so we talk more now. We can enjoy our time together on the porch or rocking chairs.”

The Fishers married in 1924. They lived through the Great Depression, the Second World War, racism, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the ups and downs of life. Their faith in Christ and friendship helped them weather every storm together.

The final chapter of their love story was written in 2011. Herbert passed away at 105. Zelmyra followed in 2013. She, too, was 105 at her death. Now, because of their faith, the Fishers can live happily ever after – together.

Who wouldn’t want that kind of love?

The secret? It starts with friendship and includes 1 Peter 4:8 – “Continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins (NLT).”

TODAY’S PRAYER

Heavenly Father, strengthen our marriage. Our friendship. Help us always to show deep love for each other. Amen.
