Marriage Devotion: Different by Design

Your spouse is a gift from God. Their differences are gifts too. God uses those differences to mature us and shape us into the image of His Son.

Today’s Scripture

“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27, NIV).

Today’s Devotion

Maybe you’ve heard our story: When we were in school, Erin was (and still is) a straight-A student. She considered anything less than perfection a failure. I, on the other hand, considered anything above a failing grade to be a massive success. Yet, God put us together – with our differences – to bring balance to each other and our relationship.

The beauty of mismatched couples

I see similar patterns at work on our marriage team at Focus on the Family.

Saundra, our Senior Project Coordinator is a midwestern gal married to a fun-loving, high-energy guy from Puerto Rico. They’ve worked through cultural differences, energy and pacing differences, and more to build a rock-solid relationship that is a model for others.

Bill, our Special Projects Manager, was raised in a prim-and-proper southern environment. His wife Julie grew up on the beaches of Lake Michigan. As Bill tells it, Julie had to remind him to relax every now and then: “If you insist on wearing a button-down oxford shirt in 90-degree weather,” she’d say, “at least roll up your sleeves so you don’t overheat.”  We’ve all joined Julie in praying for Bill.

What if your spouse’s quirks and contrasts are exactly what you need?

The Apostle Paul brings a light-hearted look at our differences in 1 Corinthians 12:21-27. In his illustration, a talking eyeball complains about a talking hand that complains about feet. The point? God made each part differently, yet each part works together in harmony. “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27, NIV).

Your spouse is a gift from God. Their differences are gifts too. God uses those differences to mature us and shape us into the image of His Son.

Count Your Blessings

Your spouse is a gift from God. Their differences are gifts too. God uses those differences to mature us and shape us into the image of His Son whom He deeply loves. Have you thanked Him and your spouse for those differences?

Today’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank you for my spouse and the ways you’ve made us different. Give us grace when those differences feel overwhelming. Remind us these differences are by your design. Amen.
