How can I free myself from the world of sexual slavery and human trafficking? I'm caught in the middle of a truly horrible situation! Through a series of circumstances that I can't take time to describe, I've ended up under the control of a group of men who make their living by means of sexual exploitation. They hire me out for commercial sex acts and force me to work without pay. They've even threatened to hurt my parents if I run off or try to get away. What should I do?
Our hearts go out to you in this painful situation. You've taken an important first step by turning to us with your question. If you were brave enough to do this, maybe you can also find the courage to ask someone nearby for help. There has to be at least one person you can talk to.
If you're under the age of 18, or if you're a young adult, we suggest that you look for a teacher, a school counselor, a pastor, a church youth leader, or a responsible, caring adult in the neighborhood. If possible, it would also be a good idea to seek assistance from a professional Christian therapist who is trained in trauma care.
We also recommend that you contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-3737-888, too. In addition, if you think it might be helpful to speak with a member of our staff, don't hesitate to contact our Counseling Department here at Focus on the Family. Your call will be kept confidential, and it won't cost you anything. Our counselors can give you a list of qualified professionals in your area, and they would be more than willing to discuss your immediate options with you over the phone.
If there's any way for you to report your situation to the authorities, this will benefit you as well as the entire community. You see, nothing can be done to stop trafficking unless someone like yourself is willing to expose what's going on. Obviously, this could be extremely risky for you because of the threats of violence against you and your parents. That's why we think it's important for you to begin by getting advice and help from someone older and more experienced (a point we've already stressed in our first three paragraphs).
We're praying for you. Though it's not our intention to over-spiritualize or make light of the dangerous and difficult situation you're facing, we want to assure you that God has promised to stand by those who trust Him in all kinds of troubling situations. Jesus is our Savior, and He is able to set you free from every kind of bondage. He will never leave you. May you feel His grace and love in new ways as you turn to Him for help and strength.
