5 Marriage Lessons from a Bug Collection

When I feel hurt or unsafe, my heart coils up. It protects me from pain - but it also blocks out love, help, and healing.

Today’s Scripture

“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10, NIV).

Today’s Devotion

Our kids are grown, but I still remember helping each of them with that one dreaded homework project: bug collecting.

The assignment was simple – catch bugs, pin them … the more bugs, the better the grade. My job as dad was to chase down grasshoppers, beetles, and “roly-polies.”

LESSONS FROM A BUG

I learned something interesting about roly-poly bugs. Their shell is tough, but their bodies are soft. When threatened, they curl into a ball– safe but closed off.

I realized I do the same thing. When I feel hurt or unsafe, my heart coils up. It protects me from pain – but it also blocks out love, help, and healing.

WHEN HEARTS FEEL CURLED UP

The difference is a bug eventually uncoils. People don’t always. Sometimes the pain lingers, and we forget how to open up again. If your heart feels stuck or your spouse’s heart seems shut tight, here’s how to start opening it together:

  • Take your pain to God. “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10, NIV).
  • Take responsibility. Apologize when needed, ask what needs to change, and follow through.
  • Communicate gently. Share how you feel “curled up” and what helps you open again.
  • Give it time. Healing isn’t instant. Keep creating safety and trust.
  • Pray together. Ask God to protect your hearts and keep them open to each other.

All of that from a roly-poly! Need extra help? Call our counseling team – it’s free. We’re cheering for you and your spouse as you work to open your hearts and strengthen your marriage.

Today’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, keep our hearts open to each other and to you. Amen.
