Your spouse can't meet all your needs. The remedy is godly self-care — seeking Him as your source of fulfillment.

Godly Self-Care

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” Psalm 55:22 (ESV)

What Is Godly Self-Care?

Godly self-care can significantly impact your marriage.

How often have you looked to your spouse to “complete” you or fulfill all your needs? The truth is, no human can truly complete you. Yet, we frequently feel disappointed or frustrated when our spouse can’t meet our unrealistic expectations.

The reality is that God is the only one who can fully satisfy our needs for strength, purpose, and love. His love for you is unconditional and complete. Because of this, you can wholeheartedly embrace His purpose for your life. However, to live out this purpose effectively, you need an essential tool: self-care.

Understanding Self-Care vs. Selfishness

Does the term “self-care” make you feel uneasy?

This discomfort often arises from a misunderstanding; many confuse self-care with selfishness. Selfishness is rooted in sin; it focuses solely on personal desires without regard for others. In contrast, self-care is about nurturing your well-being so that you can serve others more effectively.

Jesus exemplified self-care in Luke 5:16: “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (NIV). He intentionally sought time alone with His Father, stepping away from the demands of the crowds and His disciples to recharge and receive divine care.

If self-care—seeking replenishment from God—was vital to Jesus’ ministry on earth, then it’s a practice worth emulating. It involves casting your burdens on the Lord, seeking His strength, and engaging in activities that restore your spirit and bring you joy.

The Importance of Filling Your Cup

Remember, you cannot give what you do not have. Take time today to fill your heart with His love and strength so that you can give generously from a place of abundance.
