As a couple, discuss the book of 1 Peter. Read each chapter together or individually, then focus your conversation on the passages below and discuss the questions that follow.
“Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8).
- In what situation did you experience extreme difficulty letting go of an offense?
- How would that situation have changed for you if you had known that the person who offended you truly had your best interests in mind?
- How can our earnestly loving one another cover “a multitude of sins” in our marriage?
In the passage above, the apostle Peter tells Christians that loving one another should be their highest priority. He isn’t just talking about a routine, brotherly love, but a deeply sincere, self-sacrificing love. A type of wholehearted love that can be recognized by the forgiveness — the covering of sins — that’s freely shared. Even though this type of love “covers” many sins in your marriage, it doesn’t give either of you a free pass to transgress. It simply means that when you earnestly love your spouse, you help foster grace and forgiveness in your marriage.
