An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. Proverbs 31:10, ESV

Today’s Devotion

Centuries ago, a worker in southern India uncovered an extraordinary stone – a large diamond that has since adorned monarchs’ crowns in India, Persia, and Britain. Today, the Koh-I-noor Diamond – weighing 105 carats – is the centerpiece of the British Queen’s coronation crown.

How much is it worth? It’s priceless. How can you replace hundreds of years of history and significance? It’s closest competitor, the Cullinan Diamond from South Africa, is valued at $400 million. The famous Hope Diamond in the Smithsonian seems cheap by comparison. It’s valued at only $250 million.

How do you care for such a valuable piece of jewelry? The Smithsonian Institution keeps armed guards around the jewel. Gemologists clean it regularly and check it for damage. When the museum closes each night, it’s lowered into a secure case. The diamond is never loaned out for display as it is too valuable to risk damage or loss.

As valuable as these gems may be, you hold a treasure worth more than all three stones together. Proverbs 31:10 says, “An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels” (ESV).

Have you ever thought of your wife that way? As worth more than the most valuable diamond?

We often turn Proverbs 31 into a “measuring stick” for what we want our spouse to be, but before God describes the Proverbs 31 woman’s virtues, He reminds us she is priceless.

Now that you’re reminded of her value, answer this: How will you treat her? Will you nurture and cherish her – like the guards and gemologists at the Smithsonian care for the Hope Diamond?

She’s a one-of-a-kind treasure. Treat her that way.

Today’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the priceless treasure of my wife. Remind me to cherish and nurture her and to always see her value and beauty. Amen.
