Today’s Scripture
“Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove to be faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2, NIV)
Today’s Devotion
Flip it up and the light turns on. Flip it down and the light shuts off. That’s it.
No one has ever invited me to their home to show off a new light switch.
I’ve never seen an art installation celebrating a diamond-studded light switch.
They never make the headlines. They don’t do anything exciting.
But you’ll notice immediately if a light switch doesn’t work.
Decidedly Unsexy, But So Important
Life is filled with “light switches” – little things we rely on but take for granted.
Your marriage is like that too. It’s built on a thousand little things you rarely think about: that your spouse will keep their word; they’ll help when you’re ill. You can depend on them to pick up the kids, pay that bill, and encourage you when you’re down. And they depend on you to do the same.
A Reminder: Be the Light Switch
God’s Word calls us to dependability. 1 Corinthians 4:2 says, “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful” (NIV).
Your spouse has given you their trust. They rely on you.
Dependability isn’t glamorous. No one thanks the light switch for doing its job. But it’s essential. Just as you rely on the switch to work, your spouse relies on you to show up day after day. You feel the same. And there is a reward for your faithfulness: a healthy marriage that’s built on trust. On dependability.
TAKE ACTION
- Do one dependable act without being asked. Examples: pick up the groceries, start the dishwasher, prep a meal, or handle a routine task your spouse usually notices. Small acts add up and build trust. Use the Marriage Assessment to see where your efforts could make the most impact.
- Acknowledge your spouse’s faithfulness. Take a moment to thank them for something they consistently do—whether it’s paying bills on time, helping with the kids, or simply showing up when needed. Be specific: “I noticed you…”
- Check in and offer encouragement. Send a text, note, or brief conversation recognizing their reliability this week. Even a simple “I appreciate how you handled…” reinforces dependability.
- Turn to God for strength. If you’re feeling worn out, pray and ask God for faithfulness and patience. Dependability comes from relying on His grace as much as your own effort.
If you’re feeling exhausted and you want to give up, turn to the One who is always faithful and reliable. He offers all the grace and strength you need.
So, be the light switch in your relationship. Be faithful. Be dependable.
Today’s Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for being faithful and reliable. Help us follow your example in the way we related to each other. Amen.
